Kids Club children enjoyed participating to the biggest National Simultaneous Storytime ever today, reading “Hickory Dickory Dash” written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood.
Well, our story time was a success. We counted down to 11am and started reading.
We know that all of our Kids Club Centres were participating as well as many schools, libraries and child care centres both in Australia and New Zealand. It was all very exciting.
We decided to read along with an Auslan (Australian Sign Language) interpreter which allowed the children to be aware of how there are different ways to communicate.
We like to open our children minds using different languages to read stories. It then becomes a natural part of life and they are able to make meaning of what is happening around them.
We hope that you are able to reread the book to your child tonight and let them tell you about their experiences with the book.
Reading a book every night increases a child’s vocabulary, cultivates active listening skills, improves visual memory and in instrumental in early brain development which leads to a better future for academic success. All that from reading one book. An added bonus is that you get to spend quality bonding time with your child.
What is National Simultaneous Storytime?
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 18th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
By facilitating NSS we aim to:
- promote the value of reading and literacy,
- promote the value and fun of books,
- promote an Australian writer and publisher,
- promote storytime activities in public libraries and communities around the country,
- and provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and others to participate in and enjoy the occasion.
