In early childhood education, celebrating cultural events such as Lunar New Year, Ramadan and Diwali, to name a few, offer unique ways for children to learn about diverse traditions and values. These celebrations include engaging activities that are age-appropriate and designed to spark curiosity and creativity:
Lunar New Year: Children participate in lion dance performances, red envelopes, tasting traditional foods and exploring stories that highlight the significance of the Lunar calendar.
Ramadan: Educators introduce children to the concept of reflection and generosity through storytelling and craft activities, as well as gaining insight into fasting, charity and community values through stories and shared experiences inspired by this holy month.
Easter: Easter egg hunts, art projects and discussions about the holiday’s traditions provide opportunities for children to engage in imaginative and social play.
St Patrick’s Day: Festivities include Irish folklore and music, green-themed art and symbols like shamrocks and storytelling that celebrates Irish culture.
Diwali: Activities such as creating rangoli patterns and learning about the festival’s story help children explore this vibrant celebration of light and joy.
Waitangi Day: Children learn about New Zealand’s history and traditions through stories, art and music that honour the connection between land and people.
Excursions and incursions are integral to deepening children’s understanding of cultural celebrations.
