Celebrating Lunar New Year 2025

This year, Kids Club embraced the Year of the Snake with a variety of engaging activities that encouraged children to explore different identities, roles and perspectives through play. These experiences strengthened their connection to community and provided meaningful opportunities for learning and creative expression.

Celebrating Lunar New Year 2025 at Kids Club is a time of joy, tradition and cultural connection, celebrated by many communities around the world. At Kids Club, we embrace this special occasion by immersing children in meaningful learning experiences that reflect the diversity of our families and communities. Through hands on activities, storytelling and creative expression, children develop a deep respect for cultural traditions and strengthen their sense of belonging.

The Significance of Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, marks the beginning of a new year in the lunar calendar. It is a time for family gatherings, honouring traditions and wishing for prosperity and good fortune. At Kids Club, our celebrations align with the principles of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), fostering cultural competence and supporting children’s exploration of diverse identities, perspectives and customs.

A Cultural Celebration Through Play and Learning

Across our centres, Lunar New Year activities were thoughtfully incorporated into our programs to encourage children to develop a deep appreciation for different cultures. Through hands on experiences, they explored traditions, expressed creativity and strengthened their social and cognitive skills through a range of engaging activities.

Making Dumplings

Children gathered to make dumplings, guided by Educators who introduced them to ingredients and demonstrated traditional folding techniques. As they shaped their dumplings, they developed fine motor skills and took pride in their creations, deepening their understanding of cultural food traditions.

Crafting Paper Snakes

To celebrate the Year of the Snake, children created their own paper snakes by linking paper strips together. They decorated them with sparkles and experimented with different lengths, comparing their creations with excitement. This activity encouraged creativity, self-expression and collaboration.

Drumming and Dragon Dance Exploration

Children explored the cultural festivities of dragon dancing and drumming, which are believed to bring good luck and blessings. Using recycled boxes, they created vibrant dragons and danced to the beat of the drum, practising their coordination to match the rhythm.

Noodle Bowl Play

Using pretend chopsticks and yarn noodles, children engaged in a playful activity that simulated traditional Lunar New Year feasting. This experience encouraged hand-eye coordination and problem solving while introducing them to cultural food traditions.

Bringing Lunar New Year Celebrations Home

Families can also continue to extend the celebrations of Lunar New Year by engaging in additional activities such as:

Creative Touch – Decorate red envelopes with drawings or messages before gifting them to siblings, family or friends.
Zodiac Yoga – Stretch and move with yoga poses inspired by the zodiac animals.
Community Celebrations – Attend Lunar New Year festivities in your local area.
Festive Reads – Explore books that share the traditions and stories of Lunar New Year.
Rhythmic Movements – Play cultural music and try different dance styles.
Lantern Creations – Make traditional lunar lanterns or colourful sun catcher lanterns.
Calligraphy Wishes – Practise traditional calligraphy and display well wishes for the new year.
Zodiac Animal Games – Discover the characteristics of your family’s zodiac signs.
Wishing Tree – Hang well-wishes on cherry blossom branches to share hopes for the year ahead
