Making sourdough Christmas ornaments is a wonderful way to create lasting memories and unique decorations for your holiday tree. Plus, this activity uses common household items, making it a simple and cost-effective craft.

Materials Needed:

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup water
Rolling pin or a clean bottle
Cup for cutting circles
Wooden skewer or toothpick for patterns
Baking sheet and parchment paper
Ribbon or string for hanging

Instructions

Mix the Dough:
Combine flour, salt and water in a bowl. Mix until a dough forms. If it’s too sticky, add more flour; if it’s too dry, add a bit more water.
Roll Out the Dough:
Flour your work surface and roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick using a rolling pin or a clean bottle.
Cut Out Shapes:
Use a cup to cut out circles or create other shapes with cookie cutters. Make sure to keep the shapes simple for easy handling.
Add Patterns:
Use a wooden skewer or toothpick to gently press patterns into the dough, such as dots, lines or festive designs.
Create Hanging Holes:
Use the skewer to make a small hole near the top of each ornament for threading ribbon or string later.
Bake the Ornaments:
Preheat your oven to 120°C. Place the ornaments on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 2-3 hours until they are completely dry and hard.

Get Creative with Patterns and Shapes

To commence this activity, look around your house for items to create patterns and shapes on your ornaments. Everyday objects can become tools for creativity!

Cups: Great for circles or smooth edges.
Keys: Press into the dough to create intricate, unique imprints.
Pens: Use the tips or caps to stamp dots or lines.
Empty paper rolls: Flatten or shape them into stars or other creative forms.

Challenge yourself to find five different shaped objects to experiment with. This adds an extra element of fun as kids explore textures and patterns around the home!

Decorating your Ornaments

Paint:
Once cool, decorate your ornaments with acrylic paints or markers. Add festive colours and designs to bring them to life.
Glitter and Glue:
Apply glue to areas you want to sparkle and sprinkle with glitter for an extra festive touch.
String and Hang:
Thread ribbon or string through the holes and tie the ends together to hang your ornaments on the tree.
